New York City
New York City, officially the City of New York and verifiably New Amsterdam, is the largest and most influential American city, encompassing Manhattan and Staten islands, the western half of Long Island, and a small portion of New York state territory to the north of Manhattan. New York City is generally made up of several areas spread across the city’s five wards—Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island—each with its own distinct way of life. Moving from one city neighbourhood to the next may be analogous to moving from one country to the next. New York is the most populated and globally connected metropolis in the country. Its urban region includes sections of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. New York, located where the Hudson and East rivers merge to form one of the world’s most important harbours, serves as both a gateway to the North American mainland and a preferred exit to the world’s oceans.
Character of the City
New York is the most ethnically diverse, spiritually diverse, economically determined, densely populated, and, according to many, the most appealing urban centre in the country. No other city has contributed more images to the collective consciousness of Americans: Wall Street represents finance, Broadway represents theatre, Fifth Avenue is naturally associated with shopping, Madison Avenue represents the promotion of business, Greenwich Village suggests bohemian lifestyles, Seventh Avenue represents form, Tammany Hall represents machine legislative issues, and Harlem inspires images of the Jazz Age, African American yearnings, and ghettos. The term flat implies both the agonies of urban life and the upward mobility of the worker masses. New York boasts a larger Jewish population than Tel Aviv, more Irish than Dublin, more Italians than Naples, and more Puerto Ricans than San Juan. Its image is the Statue of Liberty, but the city is also a metaphor, the field where Emma Lazarus’ ‘whirlwind tost’ individuals from each country are transformed into Americans—and if they stay in the city, they become New Yorkers.
For over two centuries, New York has been the largest and wealthiest American metropolis.Outsiders possessed the city, but they were, as James Fenimore Cooper put it, “basically national in intrigue, position, and interests.” Nobody associates the place with a specific state, but rather with the United States.” New York, formerly the capital of both its state and the nation, has evolved into a global city in terms of trade and perspective, with the most acclaimed horizon on the planet. It also became a target for global fear-based tyranny, owing primarily to the destruction of the World Trade Centre in 2001, which had served as the most visible symbol of the city’s global power for three decades. In any event, New York offers its residents a variety of adjacent communities that provide them with natural meals, languages, and experiences. New York, a metropolis of distinct differences and significant logical problems, may be the most appropriate representative of a diverse and big country.
The city site
Areas of New York’s rock bedrock extend back over 100 million years, although the geology of the city today is mostly the consequence of the cold retreat that marked the end of the Wisconsin Glacial Stage around 10,000 years ago. Awesome erratic stones in Manhattan’s Central Park, profound pot melancholies in Brooklyn and Queens, and the frosty moraine throughout the rest of the metropolitan zone all silently declare the huge severity of the ice. Cold temperatures also caused the conduits throughout the city to fail. The Hudson and East canals, Spuyten Duyvil Creek, and Arthur Kill are actually Atlantic Ocean estuaries, with the Hudson tidal as far north as Troy. The approximately 600 miles (1,000 kilometres) of New York shoreline are in constant fight with the water, which dissolves the land and deposits new sediment elsewhere. Despite the fact that the harbour is always dug, dispatch routes are consistently clogged with canal debris and are too shallow for modern remote ocean vessels. South of Manhattan’s rockbound region is a sheltered, deepwater safe haven with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1524, the Italian pilot Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to enter the harbour, which he named Santa Margarita, and he revealed that the slopes encompassing the vast expanse of New York Bay gave the impression of being rich in minerals; more than 90 types of valuable stone and 170 of the world’s minerals have been discovered in New York. Verrazzano’s difficult battle culminated in 1964, when the world’s largest suspension bridge was built to cross the Narrows at the gateway to Upper New York Bay.
New York has architecturally significant buildings in a variety of styles and time periods, from the saltbox-style Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House in Brooklyn, the oldest section of which dates back to 1656, to the modern One World Trade Centre, the skyscraper at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan and the world’s most expensive office tower by construction cost.
Manhattan’s skyline, with its numerous skyscrapers, is well-known, and the city has hosted several of the world’s tallest structures. As of 2011, New York City had 5,937 high-rise buildings, with 550 finished projects that were at least 330 feet (100 meters) tall, ranking second in the world after Hong Kong, which had over 50 completed skyscrapers taller than 656 feet (200 meters). These include the Woolworth Building, an early example of Gothic Revival architecture in skyscraper construction, which was completed in 1913 and was the world’s tallest building for 17 years.
Major tourist destinations include Times Square, Broadway theatre productions, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the United Nations Headquarters, museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, greenspaces such as Central Park and Washington Square Park, Rockefeller Centre, Manhattan Chinatown, luxury shopping along Fifth and Madison Avenues, and events such as the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and the Unisphere in Queens, the Bronx Zoo, Coney Island in Brooklyn, and the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx are among the top attractions in the boroughs outside of Manhattan. In 2015, the 630-foot ferris wheel known as the New York Wheel was under construction on Staten Island’s northern shore, overlooking the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbour, and the Lower Manhattan cityscape.
