Gold Coast, Australia.
Here’s how to enjoy the Gold Coast, from theme parks to shopping, surfing to ancient rainforest.
The Gold Coast’s main draw is its beaches, particularly the world-famous length of sand in Surfers Paradise. Beyond the beaches, explore relaxed suburbs, a thriving culinary scene, and the Gold Coast’s well-known theme parks. Don’t miss an excursion to the subtropical hinterland for rainforest treks and waterfalls.
The Gold Coast is well-known for its surf beaches and laid-back lifestyle, but its sophisticated dining scene provides foodies with some genuinely delicious options.
The Gold Coast boasts a restaurant for every mood and occasion, from simple coastal diners offering world-class seafood to extravagant splendor in one of the region’s most upscale hotels. Try native Australian ingredients like kangaroo, a Down Under twist on a European classic, or an exciting combination of unique flavors.
With around 70 kilometres (44 miles) of beaches and four incredible point breaks, it’s clear to see why the Gold Coast draws surfers from all over the globe.
The Gold Coast boasts some of the best and most consistent waves in Australia. Its beaches are guarded year-round by expert lifeguards, and the conditions are suitable for all skill levels. Here are five amazing places to ride the waves.
Rainbow BayRocks
The southern points of Snapper Rocks, Kirra, Rainbow Bay, and Duranbah, which constitute the Superbank, are often regarded as the best surfing places on the Gold Coast. The Superbank break is a must-do for experienced surfers and hosts the annual Quicksilver Pro competition. The wave is a right-hand point break that consistently barrels and can produce heavy, hollow barrels that are only suitable for experienced surfers. Many surfers stay in and around Surfers Paradise to experience the breakers between the town and Snapper Rocks, which is 45 minutes south.
Rainbow Bay
Rainbow Bay is suited for both novice and advanced surfers, with three points forming one of the world’s longest right-handers. Rainbow Bay’s beach is patrolled year-round and features a fantastic sheltered swimming area near the shore, making it a favorite family destination. Schedule a family surfing class with Coolangatta Learn to Surf. After that, take a trip down the coastal boardwalk to the Point Danger viewing platform, where you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast and glimpse humpback whales from May until November. Enjoy an alfresco supper at the Rainbow Bay Surf Club when the sun sets.
Currumbin
Currumbin Alley (also known as “the Alley”) is one of the most well-known breaks on the Gold Coast, with consistently high-quality waves. It’s a popular surf site for intermediate surfers, with a nice right-hand point break and a manageable face, but it also caters to beginners, with whitewash waves on the inside. This is an excellent place to learn to surf because it is protected from southerly onshore winds. Currumbin Alley Surf School offers year-round surfing training in groups or one-on-one, located just five minutes from Coolangatta Airport.
Duranbah Beach
Duranbah Beach, often known as D-bah by locals, is one of the most popular surfing destinations on and around the Gold Coast (it’s actually just across the border, the northernmost beach in New South Wales), offering superb surf even when conditions aren’t ideal for massive swells. Duranbah Beach holds international and professional surfing competitions, including the Volcom TCT Surf Series. Peaking waves frequently create great left and right-hand waves with whackable lips and solid, hollow barrels, making them ideal for more experienced surfers. After surfing, eat fish and chips on the hill while watching the sunset.
Burleigh Heads
Burleigh Heads has some of the most consistent waves on the Gold Coast, attracting a large number of surfers looking to catch a “Burleigh barrel”. There are three different breaks that, given the correct conditions, combine to form an excellent long ride. Expect fast, hollow, thick barrels that break over sand; these are only suitable for expert surfers. For beginners, Michael Barry, a former world professional surfer, offers private lessons at Godfathers of the Ocean Surf School. After surfing, recharge with a wonderful breakfast at Burleigh Social.
